Is It Faith or Is It Fake? Heres The Only Way To Know If Your Faith Is Real

We need to talk about faith.

What do you think when you hear the word faith?

We know God created the universe by faith, and Jesus performed countless miracles by faith.

All throughout the Bible, the power of God was manifested in the lives of His people by faith.

But why don’t we see those things in our lives?

Does faith still work the same way?

What Happened To Faith?

So what does the Bible say about faith?  Is there more to it than simply believing in God?

James 2:19
You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.

James was talking to people who believed like many Christians do today.  He compares their faith to only believing that there is a God.

Believing in Jesus as our Savior is good, but it’s only the beginning.

In Matthew 7, Jesus illustrated this point.  He made it clear that not everyone that calls Him Lord will be saved.  It’s only those that have true fellowship with Him by hearing and doing what He says.

Matthew 7:21-23
Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father in heaven.  Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?  Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!’

Acting in faith is the only way to please God.  Jesus went on to talk about the man who built his house on the sand and the one who built on the rock.  In the end, one was destroyed and the other stood firm.

The difference between the two?  Hearing and doing what He says.

Matthew 7:24
Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

You can quote verses and recite scripture passages all day, but unless you do it, it means nothing.  If you aren’t getting results by walking in faith, chances are you aren’t doing what He is telling you.

This is the difference between being a forgetful hearer who is always defeated and being a doer that gets results.

God doesn’t want to see His children destroyed.  It does not please Him.  And since He has provided everything you need to overcome the evil in this world through Jesus, the responsibility is on you to apply it.

Hebrews 11:6
And without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

True faith will be working and producing something in your life.   If it’s not, it is dead and worthless.

When you have problems, saying you have faith in God won’t help.  It takes specific and deliberate action to prove what you believe.

James 2:18,20
You say you have faith without actions, but I will show you my faith by my actions…Do you want proof that faith without actions is worthless?

Faith is the only way you will ever see God work in your life and it’s the only way to see results.  If you aren’t confident that what He says is true, you won’t apply it.

But if you ever hope to get results and please God, you have to be confident.  You have to be 100% sure that His way will work.

Hebrews 11:1
Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.

How To Walk By Faith

One great way you can prove your faith is by what you say.

When you were saved, you confessed and believed in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead. The act of speaking proved your faith, and you received Jesus as your savior.

Romans 10:9
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Speaking by faith is how you received Jesus.  So does it work for anything else?

Walk By Faith in Christ Colossians 3:1

Paul said the same way you received Jesus (believing and speaking by faith) should continue throughout your life.

Jesus frequently talked about faith and how to use it.

He asked the disciples on many occasions why their faith was so small and told them how to fix it.

And most of the time He told them to say something.

Matthew 17:20
He replied, “Because you have so little faith.  Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

Luke 17:6
And the Lord said, “If you have faith like a grain of mustard, you would have said to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea,’ and it would have obeyed you.

Matthew 21:21
And Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen.

Throughout His ministry, Jesus told His followers that if they spoke in faith, they would get results.

But he didn’t just tell them to do it.  He was a living example.

Jesus Spoke By Faith

Over and over, Jesus spoke to disease and demons and healed everyone that believed He could.  Here are just a few examples of Jesus speaking words of faith that resulted in miracles.

This is what it means to prove your faith with action.

Matthew 17:18
Jesus rebuked the demon, and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.

Mark 11:14,20
Then He said to the tree, “May no one ever eat of your fruit again.” And His disciples heard this statement. The next morning as they passed by the fig tree he had cursed, the disciples noticed it had withered from the roots up.

Luke 8:24
The disciples went and woke Him saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Then Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters, and they subsided, and all was calm.

Matthew 8:16
When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to Him, and H
e drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.

Luke 9:42
Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father.

Luke 4:39
And He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.

Luke 4:35
Jesus ordered the spirit, “Be quiet and come out of the man!” The demon threw the man down in front of them and went out of him without doing him any harm.

After Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit fell on Him and God said that He was pleased with Him.  It was Jesus’ faith that pleased God.

Matthew 3:17
And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him, I am well pleased.”

1 John 2:6 Live as Jesus Did

If we aren’t walking by faith the same way, God is not pleased and we will not see Him working in our lives.

If Jesus is our example, we should walk and talk like He did.

He grew in wisdom and faith to the point He was able to do miracles. He expects us to do the same things and go further.

John 14:12
Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these because I am going to the Father.

The disciples followed Jesus’ example, understanding that faith without action is dead.

Acts 9:40-41
But Peter asked them all to leave the room; then he knelt and prayed. Turning to the dead body he said, “Get up, Tabitha.”  And she opened her eyes! When she saw Peter, she sat up!  He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then he called in the widows and all the believers, and he presented her to them alive.

Acts 14:10
So Paul called to him in a loud voice, “Stand up!” And the man jumped to his feet and started walking.

Acts 13:9-11
Saul, also known as Paul, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he looked the sorcerer in the eye.  Then he said, “You son of the devil, full of every sort of deceit and fraud, and enemy of all that is good! Will you never stop perverting the true ways of the Lord?
Watch now, for the Lord has laid his hand of punishment upon you, and you will be struck blind. You will not see the sunlight for some time.”  Instantly mist and darkness came over the man’s eyes, and he began groping around begging for someone to take his hand and lead him.

The Faith of Abraham and Noah

Speaking isn’t the only way to show your faith, but it is one great example.

God promised Abraham that his descendants would come through his son, Isaac.  And when God told him to bring Isaac as a sacrifice, he did it without hesitation.

Hebrews 11:17-19
It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was testing him.  Abraham, who had received God’s promises, was ready to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, even though God had told him, “Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted.”
Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again.  And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead.

Noah showed his faith by building the ark when there were no signs it was going to rain.

He spent years and years building the ark based on nothing but the Word of God.

His faith was in those words.  He believed what God said and proved it by doing what God told him.

Imagine if Noah said “God, I believe you when you say there is going to be a flood, but I’m not going to build an ark. I just don’t see how. But I will keep believing in you and your goodness, even though I don’t understand it right now.”

He would have drowned with the rest of the world!

Saying you believe and acting on what you believe is not the same thing.

Faith Saved Our Son’s Life

Many of you know that my wife had our son Benson at 22 weeks gestation.  He only weighed 1lb.  The medical team said he was not viable, and told us hold him until he died because they could not help him.

But that wasn’t God’s will.  We knew it was God’s will that he live and be in good health.

Death, sickness, and disease are part of the curse that Jesus came to destroy.  We aren’t subject to those things anymore.  But it takes faith to overcome them in your own life.

So when Benson was born, we chose to walk by faith.  We chose to speak life and God’s promises about health and healing over him.

We knew what God’s will was (complete health and wholeness), and we acted on it by saying it.

At a certain point not long after he was born, God spoke a verse to me that He had shown me multiple times the previous two years.

Romans 8:11
The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

As I heard Him speak it to me, I knew that was my anchor.  There was nothing in this world that could shake me.  No matter what happened, I knew that the Spirit was working in Benson, healing his whole body and giving him life.

When they told us his lungs weren’t functioning like they should, we told him that the Spirit of God was working in his lungs, and life was flowing through his body.

When we learned he had a grade 4 brain bleed, we told it to resolve and told his brain to be made whole.  And it did.

Time after time, we spoke over Benson and he made progress.  We saw small improvements most days, and some days nothing changed at all.  But we never wavered.  We believed what God told us, and never let it go.

I would often sit next to Benson’s incubator and picture the Spirit moving through every muscle and tissue, every organ and cell in his body.

That word was more real than anything that was happening around us.

Miracle Baby Benson Artman 22 Week Preemie

We stood on God’s Word and did what Jesus did.  We spoke to Benson’s body, and it responded.

Walking by faith saved our son’s life, and brought him home with no long term effects after six months in the NICU.

Sure, we could have sat and waited for something to happen, “praying” and hoping, fretting and worrying, but I can guarantee that it would have ended terribly.

The only way you will ever see God’s will working in your life is to walk by faith and stand on His Word.

Faith Without Action Is Dead

Beware anytime someone tells you to “hold on to your faith” or “God is working things out for you” or to “just let go and let God”.

Unless you are doing something to prove your faith, it’s dead and worthless.

James 2:17
In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

When you realize you still have the same problems you did last week and last year and 5 years ago, you may start to wonder if God is even listening.

I’m here to tell you there is a better way.

Of course God is listening, but He’s waiting for you to prove your faith.  If you step out you will experience His presence and see amazing results in your life.

Luke 18:8
I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?

Matthew 8:10
When Jesus heard this, he was so surprised that he turned and said to the crowd following him. “I tell you in all of Israel I’ve never found anyone with this much faith!

The encouragement and feel good preaching in churches today is only a temporary fix.   We need to start doing something to prove what we believe.

So pay attention when you sense the Holy Spirit directing you, and do whatever He says.  That’s how miracles happen.

James 1:22
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Which one are you?  A hearer only, or a doer?

Get this truth in you and make the change.  Put your faith to work, and be deliberate and specific!

It’s the only way to please God and it’s the only way to live the life He has planned.

Romans 1:17
For in this is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

Habakkuk 2:4
“I, the LORD, refuse to accept anyone who is proud. Only those who live by faith are acceptable to me.”

Here’s a prayer to get started :

Lord, Thank you for your Word and your Spirit that lives in me.  Thank you for revealing the truth and showing me that your will is for me to walk by faith.  I want my faith to glorify you and I want my life to be a testament to your faithfulness.

And since I want to see your hand in everything I do, I will make it a point to do exactly what you tell me.  Show me any area where I have not trusted you fully, and help me to know how to change it.

I believe you are good, and that you reward those that diligently seek you.  Thank you for the gift of faith, and for giving me wisdom to know how to be a doer and not a hearer only.  I trust you have great things in store as I begin to speak faith and walk by faith just like Jesus.  I love you and thank you for the results.  In Jesus Name, Amen.

Start acting on your faith today and watch how much your life begins to change.  I’m standing with you and believing you will know what to do. The Holy Spirit will guide you in wisdom and truth.

Comment and let me know how you are proving your faith!

Let me help you get to know God better and find His plan for your life.

I’ve loved following your story. Your family obviously knows the Word and understands true faith and the power of your confession/actions in producing fruit of that faith. Pulling the unseen into the seen! God is good and he is no respecter or persons!

      Thanks D.C.!

It’s awesome to see how God prepares us for battles we don’t know are coming. He was there to guide us every step of the way.

I have followed your story from day 1. My daughter was going through the same at the same time. She delivered twins at24 weeks 5 days. We lost the girl , but have a happy , healthy little boy today.

Her early delivery was due to a short cervix and also the onset of Hurricane Irma……

This was my wake up call from God….. having been saved at 16, over the years I grew farther and farther away from Him.

My walk with him was renewed, but I still struggle with worry…. I need to build my faith walk.

I find comfort in all the posts and would love to know more about what led up to Benson’s early birth. (That is if you are willing to share)

God bless you all, and please keep our journey in your prayers as we keep yours in ours!

      Hi Nora,

So sorry to hear about your loss. God is near to all that call on Him. I’m happy that we have helped you find comfort. We will be sharing the full story, but it’s difficult to tell, as there is a lot involved. We’ll be standing with you for strength and comfort as you grow closer to Him!

I had gotten to this exact same point recently. We cannot earn our way into heaven, but we must show our faith by doing God’s will. It must be in us so that it bubbles out and infects others so they, too, wish to have what we have. They can only see this by our doing. Our faith has to mean enough to us so that we do.

I woke up two Sunday’s ago, with some very clear intentions, so I declared them out loud. I’m not questioning or doubting the direction I need to go just believing it’s the Holy Spirit guiding me.

I have followed Benson’s story from the beginning and have prayed for him so many times. The Lord has been working in my heart and I long for His direction. I have been a follower of Jesus for nearly 50 years and He is always doing something, never wanting me to become “comfortable”. Please say a prayer for me that I will know what it is He is leading me to so now.

      Hi Alice,
Thanks so much for agreeing with us in prayer for Benson. God is always faithful, and Ben is doing so great! I know what it’s like to long for God’s direction. I wrote about it in another article, and specifically how God lead me to find His purpose for my life. Please read it, I think you will find some great truth that will help you find His plan for your life. I’ll join with you in faith, and I know you’ll find what you are looking for.

Sometimes it can really be difficult to walk by faith. But it is better to declare what we want irrespective of the situation. Speaking emboldens us and little by little, we find it difficult to accept any other thing but the truth. I’m happy your son is doing very well. God’s Word is forever, nothing ever changes that
